residential building that showcases smart growth, and transit-oriented goals.
It is located in the Fields Corner neighborhood of Dorchester on a lot that has
been vacant for 30 years. The building comprises 27 affordable apartments near
the Fields Corner MBTA station and several bus stops.
The
building has four studio apartments, two one-bedroom apartments, 17 two-bedroom
apartments, and four three-bedroom apartments. Some notable features of the
apartments include bamboo floors, dishwashers, high ceilings, ample natural
light from the many windows, and spaciousness. There is also a community room
with a kitchen where residents can socialize, a bicycle storage room, and a
laundry room. The building provides 13 parking spaces and outdoor green space.
Bloomfield Gardens meets LEED-Silver guidelines for energy and environmental
efficiency.
The
non-profit organization Vietnam American Initiative for Development (VietAID)
bought the property to add affordable housing in Fields Corner near affordable
transportation. The Massachusetts Housing Partnership provided some funds for
the project, which began construction in 2011.
